Dirty Dancing: The Next Generation

Last week I was having a conversation with my sister about our favorite 80’s movies. I should note that this is a conversation we probably have at least once every few weeks. We take a little trip down memory lane to when we used to visit the local video store and rush toward the “New Release” section just hoping our favorites hadn’t already been checked out.

We found ourselves reminiscing about Dirty Dancing, which is one of THE movies from our childhood. We saw it in the movie theater on a Sunday with our parents, and we all loved the movie so much that my dad (for the first and only time ever) suggested we go and buy tickets for the very next showing. Yep. We watched Dirty Dancing two times in a row that day. And then, of course, we watched it about a million more times on our VCR.

When we would visit my grandmother in Colorado, we would spend hours practicing “the lift” in her front yard. Thankfully her grass was really soft, so when we would inevitably fail to perfect it, we didn’t injure ourselves. As Laura reminded me in our conversation last week, “the lift” is really best practiced in the water…too bad my grandmother didn’t have a swimming pool, because then we would have totally nailed it…obviously.

Needless to say, when I saw this video earlier this week, I couldn’t even begin to wipe the grin from my face. If I am being totally honest, I cried a little, too. It is just SO perfect in every way.

I can definitely say that while watching this little boy I had the time of my life!

Nobody puts baby in a corner.

  1. What can I say? Best video ever! Seriously, I was obsessed with Dirty Dancing when I was younger, so this totally made my morning. Thank you so much for sharing this here 😉

  2. Dirty Dancing was “the” movie of my teen years. I don’t know which I was more in awe of, Patrick Swayze or the fact that Jennifer Grey was so gorgeous without being perfect.

That little boy is amazing - thank you for the morning pick-me-up!

  3. I love love love that song and movie. Nothing new can ever touch the original. I can’t dance worth any amount of money but he did that.

  4. Man that was such a great movie!!! It is so sad that Patrick Swayze died so young. I remember having to sneak into that movie because my mom didn’t want me to see it because of the abortion scene.

    And that kid has moves!

  5. Who is this little man? Such hip action! Love his taste in movies and can’t help but wonder how many times he’s seen it! I first heard of this movie when a pal raved on about seeing it with John a guy I really liked. Was more than a bit jealous. Fast forward six months to when I started going out with him and he asked if I’d seen it. “No but I know you have! Heh heh.” He laughed, we saw it and got married 2 years later. We got the video and always called it “that date movie.” So fun. Thanks for reminding me!

  6. Fun column, sorry DD isn’t a fave, though. That kid can really dance. I don’t remember you guys dancing in the yard, sorry I wasn’t aware of it, that would have been fun to watch.

  7. When Steve Ballmer said goodbye to Microsoft employees he played that time of my life song. Little Vanity Fair trivia. That’s interesting Buck took you two times in a row, that was nice of him.
Out of curiosity, did you guys ever succeed in the lift?

  8. OMG - grinning from ear to ear! This kid reminded me of Austin-standing in front of the TV and taking in every move. Someone needs to get that boy in salsa dancing classes - he is a natural. Yes, one of my top 10 movies of all time -and there is not another song that describes “great days or times” like that song…..and did not know you guys watched this twice in one day at the theater! Awesome!

  9. Oh my gosh!! I loved that movie! And Johnny was such a catch! Yes, the lift is something we practiced in the water too - after we couldn’t get it on ground.

  10. How freakin adorable is he??? OMG I wish at least one of my sons would do this. It would make me infinitely happy!!! Is there any movie that comes close to being as cool as Dirty Dancing? Footloose? Maybe. Love this!!!

  11. Holy that boy is amazing!!! Where was he all those days we spent trying to learn to Dirty Dance???
I am going to get someone to do the lift with me. It may not be Ryan Gosling, sadly, but I will find someone.

  12. Oh, Dirty Dancing. I still remember being a pubescent girl and lusting after Patrick Swayze. It was pretty much a right of passage for all girls in the 80s and early 90s. That kid is incredible – another Derek Hough?

  13. HO-LEE COW! How freaking awesome is he? That is my go to movie and I’m so sad Patrick Swayze has left us…that was my fav growing up. How did I miss that video??!!

  14. I carried a Watermelon?!?!

    That boy has moves!

Love Dirty Dancing. Love. Not sure when it will be age appropriate for my daughter (she’s 7)? My son will probably have the same reaction as my husband if he ever sees it- “That is the dumbest movie ever.” Men!

  15. Well, now it’s obvious how old I am - I watched Dirty Dancing when I was in college. It came out during “dead week” (is that still a term) and a friend and I went every night - 5 nights in a row!!! Still on of my favorite movies ever!!!

  16. That kid? Amazing. I watched this three times. I’m transfixed.
And I was talking about that movie all weekend!
Also, we drove through the Catskills yesterday, which is where the movie takes place, of course. It was in its fall foliage splendor.
