Blogging can be a bit lonely at times. You sit alone, God-willing surrounded by nothing but quiet, you write your thoughts, and then you send them out into cyberspace. The words you write might convey your innermost, deepest feelings or be your best attempts to make your readers laugh out loud though often you aim to hit both those marks within the same post. Most of the time, fortunately, the words pour out like a salt shaker at a restaurant when the lid is not screwed on properly. But sometimes the words are slower, as every writer knows, and getting them out of you feels like coaxing out the maple syrup when you are trying to get the last little bit from the bottle. You know what you want to say, you know how you want to say it, but it doesn’t just flow onto the page. It is during those times especially, that you may find yourself seeking inspiration through other blogs.
Part of what makes blogging unique is that it starts out as a community full of strangers that through the power of words on a screen, quickly become friends, regardless of the virtual space they inhabit. Most of the time, you know as you read their beautiful writing that you will never actually get to meet them and become friends in real life. You will never be able to sit across from them drinking a glass of wine and telling them endlessly about how much their words matter to you. You imagine the scenario in which you could truly convey to them how much like your favorite celebrity, you just actually feel like you know them, so much so that at times it feels weird not to be able to pick up the phone and call them, except you don’t have their phone number.
Good writing makes me feel connected to the author, whether I find that writing in a book or on a blog, and the connection feels deeper than the words on my computer. Sometimes those kinds of universally affecting posts “go viral”, meaning that you see them all over social media. You will click on Facebook to find multiple friends sharing links to those blogs. The moment you yourself click on it, you know why, because it is instantly captures you. More often than not, though, like with anything in life that requires a bit of luck to reach a wider audience, amazing posts stay dormant. The community reads them, but the world at large often misses out on some incredible writing. And don’t even get me started on the bad writing that exists out there, and the bloggers who simply write to capitalize on their ability to shock to drive blog comments or site stats.
So, without further ado, I want to share some writing with you that has had a profound affect on me. I want to give a few of my favorite bloggers some of “The Dose of Reality” love today. Because sharing is caring, right? At least that is what I tell my children on a daily hourly minute-to-minute basis. I will admit right up front that I could never begin to cover all of the writing that I read on a daily basis, so I have no doubt that I will miss someone whose words I cherish. Hopefully what the inevitable head smack moment will provide me is the inspiration to do this again. To make sure that good writing is read. To further this community of people that I like to also call my friends.
So without further ado, and in no particular order:
http://outlawmama.com/2012/08/20/two-poles-ideal-christie-and-real-world-christie/ (When I originally read this post, I immediately tweeted it, because I related to every single thing Christie said here. It one of those things you read and you wish you could have written it.)
http://www.erinmargolin.com/fast-car (This is the very first post I remember reading of Erin’s but it was certainly not the last. She is a gifted writer, both in short fiction and as a blogger. Most of all, she is truly one of the most generous writers I feel like I know.)
http://www.writingwishing.com/2012/08/thirty-six/ (I absolutely adore everything that Alison writes. She authors one of those blogs I visit when I want to think or just simply smile, because I know it will happen there.)
http://sperk77.blogspot.com/2012/08/turn-back-time-again.html (Kimberly has inspired me with the sheer honesty of her writing since I first read her some months ago. This post in particular captured everything about her writing that I think is amazing.)
http://www.whiskeyinmysippycup.com/wimsc/fine-lines.html (Y’all, Shannon, or Mr. Lady as she is often known, can sling arrows into my heart with her writing. It literally slays me at times, and I find myself unable to even leave a comment because of my tears. This post was one of those, not because it all rang true, but the parts that did, well, wow, same but different.)
http://www.sisterhoodofthesensiblemoms.com/2012/05/ellen-is-better-than-webmd/ (You will totally laugh out loud. I promise. Trust me. And of course, after the serious posts I already shared, you could probably use a laugh, right? This is one of my favorite sites to visit because like my beloved Rants From Mommyland, these ladies always make me laugh!)
http://www.reedsterspeaks.com/2012/01/the-reedsters-winter-work-at-home-wardrobe/ (I have actually had the pleasure of meeting Cindy in real life and let me tell you that she is as good as it gets. If she lived closer, I would totally stalk her until she agreed to be my real-life friend. By the way, Lisa and I now use s’wobe as a regular part of our speech.)
So, ladies, suffice it to say, I think you all rock! It is truly thanks to an amazing writing community that I have found most of you, and I hope that The Dose of Reality readers come give you some love.
My question for everyone reading this is, what are your favorite blogs to read (besides mine, of course, wink, wink!)? Tell me in the comments so that I can add them to my own list and give me an excuse to put off doing the laundry while I read them all!
Ashley, thank you so much for your kind words (and shout out)! I know what you mean about being able to feel connected with people through their words. That’s mostly why I blog and still continue to. The community is amazing, isn’t it?
It is an amazing community, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it!
Yay for less loneliness!!! I am grateful to be in the company of you and these other women writers that I adore from afar. The world feels a little less hosile and alienating today. Thanks to you. This is good stuff. You are good people.
No, you are good people!
We could do this all day, right? 😉
What a lovely thing to be included on this list, thank you! I would agree with your choices even if we weren’t on the list. 😉 The only post I haven’t checked out is Whiskey in my Sippy Cup. I’ll have to click on over.
You know why you know good writing? Because you are such a good writer yourself. Thanks for putting a smile on my face today. Ellen
Well, aren’t you sweet?!
You made me smile with this comment!
Great post! Thanks for sharing your favs. I like to check out http://thishappymom.com/ She keeps me laughing and reminds me to count my blessings. Have a great week! Thanks for stoping by my blog earlier.
Can’t wait to check it out!
I love laughing!
Reading your list of writers made me smile, so many women I love to follow. My blog reading actually started with http://www.jennsylvania.com/. She’s all famous now, and has a million books. However, I fell in love with her snarky cruelty and sharp wit years ago. I’d also suggest reading her books (starting with Bitter is the New Black). The other blog I’ve loved for years is mimismartypants.com. She’s also snarky and quick witted. Like Jenn, she’s from Chicago, and I’m pretty sure has bite with her bark. I’d suggest starting from the beginning.
Many of you who take part in Yeah Write already know, http://www.the-pish-posh.com/. However, I love reading her journey. As someone that also struggled leaving academia, I really appreciate her journey. I think we could all learn something from her.
I also read a lot of rabbi blogs. One of my favorites is Ima On the Bima: http://imabima.blogspot.com/. It’s about Jewish parenting and right now, her son has cancer, so it also documents the great strength of her family.
If you need a more Christian perspective, my friend Ari writes a beautiful blog http://www.tothinkistocreate.com/. She’s so open about her love, her pain, and her faith. I find myself lost in her posts and those of her friends.
I pink puffy heart Jen Lancaster! She rocks the free world!
Thank you for this great list…I can’t wait to check out the ones I don’t know.
{Melinda} So kind of you to spotlight other awesome bloggers … that’s what makes community, well, community! Sharing together and letting others know that we relate to them. 😉 I love http://powerofmoms.com and http://graceformamas.com.
Very glad I found you, too … your posts about being more “present” with your kids have been fabulous! Keep pouring out that salt shaker, mama!
Thank you so much Melinda! I love this comment!
Can’t wait to check out your suggestions!
Thanks Ash for the shout-out, and for rounding up some amazing posts by my favorite bloggers, many of whom I consider friends - though we’ve never met. I love the community of women bloggers, sharing their stories, one post at a time.
Great way to put it Cindy. Love it!
Oh my gosh. Thank you. This is a beautiful post, Ashley. I share your sentiments about blogging with authenticity and am looking forward to reading the other posts you listed. This really means so much to me, I can’t articulate it. Blessings to you.

This is a great blog that I find inspiring: Spiritual Journey of a Lightworker http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/
Also, http://themommypadawan.com
Can’t wait to check out those suggestions!
Thank you!
I agree with the feeling of connection with fellow bloggers. Your list is great and the ones I don’t know, I will check out.
Thanks for the shout out!
XO,
Pippi
You are welcome…thank you for being awesome!
ashley,
i’m honored and stunned to be on this list, and alongside such phenomenal writers/people. thank you. i’m speechless. i don’t even know what to say. except thank you and i adore you….
hugs, sweet friend!
Well, I adore you. You are a treasure to the entire blogging community.
Ash, thanks for sharing these - I read every single one and enjoyed them all. I was especially touched by whiskeyinmysippycup, as I could relate to her experience about a parent deciding you no longer were essential to them, and I was happy to finish up with reedsterspeaks - literally burst out laughing at the Christmas tree skirt skirt….too funny - and LOVE S’wobe!
So glad you read them all and liked them!
The Reedster Speaks is laugh out loud funny for sure!
Thank you so much - this list is SO helpful!!!
You are quite welcome!
I can’t wait to check out these bloggers Ashley. How supportive and thoughtful of you to do this kind of a post. What a GREAT idea!!!
Thank you!
I am going to do more of them…there were many others (hello, like you!) who I didn’t get to include this time.
I just started reading through your list at Outlaw Mama and got totally SUCKED IN. If the rest of your list is this strong, you’re rocking the suggestions, Ashley. Nice work.
Right now, I’m reading and loving (and not commenting because I’m the worst at commenting - need to work on that) ….
here - doy!
Brittany Herself
Rage Against the Minivan
I Am Not The Babysitter
Adventures in Babywearing
Raising Colorado
Ann’s Rants
and, like you, Whiskey in my Sippycup
You ROCK the blog-reading and blog-love, Ashley. We could all learn a lesson from you.
Total headsmack moment when I got to this comment, because HELLO, how did I not include you?? I knew this would happen. I feel like one of those people who realizes after they walk off the stage at the Oscars that they forgot to thank their mother or something.
Love me some Raising Colorado. I put that one on my first love letter to blogging several months ago!
You’re so sweet! Sometimes it does seem like we’re just sending our work out into a void cluttered with a million thoughts and voices!
I agree, which is why it is nice to remind people that their words matter.
This is great! I needed this. Thanks for these links, after looking through them I feel like I am already part of a bigger community and cant wait to know them all better. Alison has been of by faves that I rave about for days.
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
Oh, man, you are so nice! My favorite blog to read is probably twobusy.typepad.com. Talk about arrow-slinging. It’s gorgeous, simply to be gorgeous. It’s an ode to his wife and kids, his life, and it is never ending poetry, with some ridiculousness tossed in for good measure.
Cannot wait to check it out…if you are a fan, I have no doubt I will be, too!
Tooooo many to list. But the first that popped in my mind, because I just recently discovered her, was kellehampton.com.
Probably have heard of her.. But her birth story of her daughter Nella will make you dehydrated from tear waterfalls. Ugh.
It is an amazing blog. I have read it many times.
It is interesting how we all connect through the written word. I can’t wait to go read some of the blogs that inspire you. Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome. I, too, love the connection through the written word.
What a sweet thing to do for your blogging friends. I’m sure they all appreciate it.
There are so many blogs I read regularly, and I am constantly adding to my list. Hm. I’m going to give this some thought.
Happy Sharefest. I hope you have a great weekend.
Can’t wait to hear what you suggest, as I love your blog.
I thought I’d commented on this post earlier in the week when I first saw it, but apparently I didn’t, so I’ll comment on it now that I’m checking out Saturday Sharefest posts
Several of these are blogs I’ve also enjoyed for some time now, but I love your other choices and have also added them to my reader. Thanks so much for the recommendations!
So glad you liked them!
Thank you for commenting!
