Sometimes as a mom you just have to say yes. Certainly no is easier, more frequent, often necessary, but the moment you find yourself saying yes, your heart gets lighter.
When I decided to embark on a yes day with Emma, I did it innocently enough at first. Mostly just to see what she would actually suggest we do it if she thought I would not say no. It was upon sharing her answers with me, with their total desire essentially just equaling time together, that I knew I must actually act. Not just half listen or nod along with the usual, “We’ll see”, but I knew I had to actually make a solid plan.
And make a plan we did. I gave Emma a few days to think over what she really wanted to do, and she literally mapped out her requests.
She wanted to shop, with me, with each of us taking turns picking a store. She allowed for random stops along the way, because every good shopper knows that you must allow for the moment that something catches your eye in a store window. She called those stops “mini” shops, which just killed me in its sweetness. I wish I had a video of the quality of her voice as she would think at bedtime, night after night, about our plan. Did I like it? Was California Pizza Kitchen the best choice for lunch? Should we indulge in dessert before or after The Container Store? What would be the best way to surprise each other with little gifts as we shopped? Honestly, for my sweet girl, the planning was as good as the actual doing.
Except the actual doing turned out to be pretty amazing, too. We held hands as we walked into the mall. We talked about the upcoming school year and whether she was nervous to find out her teachers. She shared with me the ideal classmates and even shared some names of those she might wish weren’t in her class. Her face was innocent and pure and seemed to lose some of the ever-increasing self-doubt as we walked along, our map in hand, just being two ladies who were out for the day.
What really struck me half way through our day was that what we were doing was not actually monumental or amazing, because my God we were simply buying a backpack and some new tennis shoes. These are things we would have done anyway. Yet this outing was different because we were together, just the two of us, with no computer or phone to distract me. This time she got all of me. This day was special because my need to say no had melded into a desire to say yes.
That is sooo awesome! I am so happy you both enjoyed so much! Those moments are sooo special and they build and form our children. I need to plan a YES day with my almost 4 yr. old that’s for sure.
I love this! Glad you had such a good day!
O how beautiful!!! Yes… it’s amazing how fulfilling it is to focus solely on one child and let go of EVERYTHING else in our lives for that moment- or afternoon- or evening. I cherish my “girl dates” just like yours with my daughter. I am usually just as excited as she is!!! We did a back to school “manicure” and dinner and movie. It was lovely!!!
Good for you! Spending time with Emma is a joy no matter what. Also, that looks like an awesome dessert treat. I like the idea of turning the phone off, good for you.
sounds like a perfect day for a mom and daughter. I like the idea of letting her plan the day, if I wasn’t scared of what Dino would ask I would have a yes day too.
This made me so proud and happy to read……your mom was somewhere beaming at this story, I just know it. I agree with John….any time spent with Emma OR Abby is a good day and a good time. This will go down in Emma’s mind as one of the best days of her life, I know it! Austin will always remember the day we spent in Central Park as one of the best days of his life….and all we did was walk around and take in the excitement of the park….nothing special in most people’s minds, but to him, he had my undivided attention the entire day! Great story…..loved this!
You were smart to do this, good work.
Thank you for writing a follow up column and letting us know what happened, it was very enjoyable to read.
I’m so glad you guys had such a great day!
I love your post! As mothers we can easily get wrapped up in the day to day routines, making sure our child’s needs are met. It is nice to stop, relax and live entirely in the moment with our children. They can certainly tell the difference & it is also so much more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your story, stopping by from SITS. Have a wonderful week with your adorable daughter
She looks like such a peach - you’ve obviously done a wonderful job and should be so incredibly proud
Hi Ashley,
That is a great story. My daughter is 11 and if I let her chose what we are going to do together as a treat, she always picks “The Mall of America”. I just loved your sweet little story. It made me soft.
So sweet. Time. The best gift you can give your child.
I need a “Yes” day. I spend so much time saying no, I forget how good it feels to say yes. Thanks for the reminder. And that picture with that smile…so adorable that I don’t think I could say no if I wanted to.
Such a sweet idea!!! What a GREAT memory you have made together!
Ooh I love Yes days! And this one with your girl sounds oh so lovely! What a perfect way to end the summer!
Thank you all so much!
It was a great day, and I cannot wait to do it again!
I love it! Am totally doing yes day! So curious about what they would want to do!
Aw. I just love this. And, um, I might sort of totally identify with “not just half listen…”
Great story, Ashley. Well told.
xo,
B
It’s amazing to me how simple their requests are when they are given the choice. Elise would say “watch a football game on TV, and make wings.” Marie would involve root beer and cookies. Grace would spend the day fishing. We’re pretty lucky, AT. Pretty lucky.
Well done.
