Or why it took me a week to recover from the midnight premiere of The Hunger Games.
There was a time, not even just in my youthful days of young love and drinking too much and general fun and frivolity, where staying up half the night did not render me half comatose the next day, desperately searching for the nearest flat surface where I would just rest my eyes for a few moments. Head thunk. ZZZZZZZZ.
I actually used to work nights in the hospital before Emma was born, sometimes even three of them in a row. Sure, I would come home and sleep until basically an hour before I had to get back up again, but nonetheless, I was able to drive without feeling like someone had thrown about a bucket of sand in my eyes and think thoughts that were completed in words other than, “Huh, what, where was I?”
So I figured going to see a midnight premiere of a movie, even on a school night was not exactly like blowing it out old school style. I mean, for God’s sake, I practically wore my pajamas. My middle of the night partying consisted of overdoing it on movie popcorn and peanut M&M’s, not tequila shots and vodka chasers. Getting to bed by 3:30 a.m. and getting up again at 6:15 should have given me enough sleep to at least function until preschool drop-off like a relatively normal person.
I have been a new mother, surviving on far less sleep for far longer before a nap was in my future, so really, what was my deal?
I loved the movie, so I felt like all of my tiredness was worth it. After all, I knew with confidence that I was truly one of the first people in America to see Jennifer Lawrence own the role as Katniss Everdeen. I knew that I was among the select few who could say with confidence that Lenny Kravitz WAS Cinna. I mean before everyone who went to see it Friday would all be saying the same things!
I was able to sneak in a pretty decent nap, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 hours, so mixed with the energy I had from seeing one of my all-time favorite books up on the big screen, I should have easily been able to rebound and recover by at least Saturday.
I am not even lying when I say that today (yes, it is Friday) is the first day that I have felt somewhat rested again.
Seriously, WHAT has happened to me?

Totally kidding, the other one is the fake aging from the Aging Booth app...but until today I felt more like the first picture!
I’m sure glad I read this before I started doing anything else. The picture at the end made me laugh. Horrible, but funny. Then I saw your real picture and just looked at it for a minute, you look so nice.
It made me laugh, too! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hahahahahahahahahahaha……Okay, now that I got that out of my system. I just wanted to…wait…nope… hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Whoo! Love that Aging Booth photo. I needed that laugh heading into the weekend!
I’m with you. I don’t know how I used to be on call each night sometimes get 1-2 hours of sleep (if that)….and function the next day. It wasn’t all *that* long ago, really, but now one midnight movie WIPES ME OUT for days on end. At least the movie was worth it, though! It was so good, it didn’t even register with me that it was 2:45 in the morning until it was over and we were walking out.
How long do you think before the second installation come out? I hope it’s not TOO many years! We’ll only be older! Then I’ll have to try to age your already aged photo….I wonder what THAT would look like!!! (Who am I kidding…I’m going to try that right now)
The next installment is November 22, 2013, but who is counting…oh wait, ME!!
Thanks for aging for my photo for me…and really, thanks for then re-aging it, that was only totally FRIGHTENING!
Glad you enjoyed this!
So glad you were part of my midnight movie posse!
Hahahahaha, you are so funny. And I totally know how you feel. Gone are the days where one off nights of three hours of sleep or less would not leave me staring into the bathroom mirror the next morning in tired horror at dark circles under my eyes that only Dracula would envy. Thank goodness for foundation highlighters.
You are pretty funny yourself my sister! Your comment made me laugh out loud!
Me thinks a guest blog should be in your future!
I was just telling a few moms on the school playground that I turned into the most horrible parent on the face of the earth the other night when Scottie woke me up from a deep sleep. Like evil, mean, not the least bit compassionate…to my Kindergarten son. Seriously, I cannot do middle-of-the-night wake-ups anymore. Sleep trumps it all. (And I am SO going to go morph other people’s photos on Aging Booth now!! Fun, fun, fun!)
You have to do it to your kids, they LOVE when you age their photos! 😉
I know what you mean about the middle of the night wake-up, we have been lucky not to have *too* many lately, but when they happen I am not at all friendly or kind.
OK…..first of all NEVER EVER EVER “age booth” one of my photo’s! I already have some OLD lady “stalking” me in mirrors and she is really ticking me off!!! Follows me everywhere!! Aside from that, I totally feel your pain of not getting enough sleep at night. Now, I’m getting a little more used to it though, since I’m up several times a night going to the bathroom anyway!! The way I see it, I might as well go on to the midnight showing while I’m up!! See what you have to look forward to?!!
Loved the article Ash! Another great one!! (loved The Hunger Games too!! I saw it yesterday!!!) Love & Hugs!!
Ha, ha, ha! I pinkie swear never to do it to you…although, I won’t promise not to pass along the possibility to Traci! 😉
You mean pregnancy is not the only time in life you have to go to the bathroom all night long? Great!
Glad you enjoyed the movie, too!
Hahaha!!! Nice picture. Hehehe!!
Dude, when everything creaks and cracks just by standing up, you know you’re getting up there. It also seems like it takes longer to get over illness now, too. Isn’t that weird? It’s like the kids suck all of our youth and immunity right out of our bodies.
That aging thing must have made you feel better after seeing it to know how fabulous you REALLY look!
I so agree with you about the creaking when you get up…and even trying to sit on the floor is harder now than it used to be!
Oh yeah, getting over illnesses definitely takes longer.
Kids really do suck the life right out of us, don’t they?! 😉
I hear you sister - one of my New Year’s RESOLUTIONS was to try and get to bed by 9 EVERY NIGHT!!!!! Which is often easier said than done most nights … still working on it …
I am pushing it these days to stay up past 10 and if I do I am such a zombie in the morning, good for you for pushing the boundaries… you never know what you can do until you try. I would be willing to bet money on it that you will be at the mid-night show of Catching Fire as well… you are just that dedicated of a fan!
