Last summer, I got an amazing opportunity to write for Modern Parent Online and I jumped at the chance to free my friends from being subjected to my every thought and feeling over email and instead force people I didn’t even know to read what I was thinking about all the time. I looked it at like free therapy, and it came at the perfect time for me. The beauty was that I would be completely supported by the team in place, so other than the fear of exposing all of my inner-most feelings to the masses, there was great security in knowing I was safe.
It reminds a lot of when your parents first let you have your own key to your house. You probably wore it around your neck or tucked in your shoe, and you felt so nervous the first time you slipped it in the lock, just wondering if someone would be on the other side of the door waiting for you, as they always had before. And of course, your mother was right there, praising you for walking straight home from the bus (little did you know, she had been watching from the window the whole time) and being so grown-up and responsible; except you still had the safety net all around you.
And then came your first apartment, your first real place of your own, the time that you would really find out about whether you were going to sink or swim. This is what my website is going to be for me. I am getting my first real apartment, and I am responsible for everything. Sure, there is essentially a maintenance man I can call if something breaks, but this is my chance to see if day after day, night after night, I can do this thing, if I can really take care of myself. Do I have what it takes to be a full-time writer, one who has thoughts and puts them down somewhere right away, as opposed to saving them up for a weekly column. Make no mistake here, I am still doing that column. I love that column, it is my place, my home away home, the place where I go when I need extra blankets on my bed or someone to tell me that they have got it all taken care of for me. I love the team there, the safety in numbers, the camarederie we all feel for a job well done, the support we give each other as writers, but I needed something else, too. I needed some freedom, some independence, I needed to jump out of the nest and see if I do in fact fly.
Oh, and I need to be able to do things like live blog Madonna’s halftime show at the Superbowl, because seriously, y’all, I can’t sit on those thoughts and keep them all to myself.
This is SO.VERY.EXCITING!!!! I’m so proud of you!! I’ve loved getting a dose of reality once a week, but more is always, always better!!! ( I only *wish* you had been live blogging the Grammys last night… or the Superbowl Halftime show. Now I feel cheated!!)
Here’s to all of the wonderfully insightful, funny, and *real* things you will be writing (and I will be reading) for years to come! <3
As you know, I could not have gotten this website off the ground without your help, so let it be known to the world (or at least all the people reading these comments) that you were an integral part of this process my friend!
Live blogging the Grammy’s would have been AWESOME.
I will totally have to do the Oscars. Except all the boring parts, which is essentially 3 hours worth of the show. I’ll use that time to talk about all the celebrities who could be my friend. 😉
Okay, I’m SUPER pissed that I didn’t get to comment on this first. However, because it’s Lisa who is the first commenter and she knows you better, I probably won’t jump off a bridge to convey my angst. Instead, I’ll just be faithful reader and friend.
Well done, girl. It’s about time.
Ha, ha, ha. Please no bridge jumping. Although, it would totally drive up the site traffic, so maybe you could do like a fake bridge jump or something? 😉
Thank you for all of your support as well!
I stole shamelessly from your site, but hey, I did put you at the top of my blogroll!
The site looks FANTASTIC!! I know this has been a long time coming and that you’ve worked very hard putting it all together. Can’t wait to read more!
Thank you! I have had a lot of help getting it up and running, including some from a pretty awesome, artistic friend of ours!
Hope you will keep reading!
So excited for you Ashley! I can’t wait to see all that happens with your own site! And yes, would love the live blogging!
Thank you Sheri!
I definitely think I will try my hand at live blogging the Oscars, which given that I do not have a TV near my computer could be tricky, BUT I am a girl who likes a challenge! 😉
GREAT NEWS ASH!!! This is what I want for you & MORE!!! Way to go and I can’t wait to read each and every one!!! You go girl!!! I have no doubts you will keep us all entertained!! Love and best wishes!!! You’re fan, friend, admirer, and Aunt…Connie
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are just the best cheerleader ever, I totally appreciate every single nice thing you ever say, I hope you know that!
Site looks great! I can always rely on you to make me feel like I’m not totally crazy — thanks for the free therapy for ME! Look forward to being a faithful reader!
Thank you Maura!
And you are quite welcome for the therapy, the beauty is that writing is like free therapy FOR me, so it is a win-win! 😉
COOL STUFF!!
Why thank you!
😉
Congratulations Ashley!!! I will be following you for SURE!! If you ever wanna “swap” guest blog posts… would be so fun!! Keep up the GREAT work!
Thanks so much!
Guest blogging does sound like fun…and hard…is this like having to do extra credit for school?! 😉
Well, I suppose it is like extra credit in school! I think you would write a blog post for my blog and I could write one for your blog and we can do the “switcharoo!”…exposure benefit for us both! I don’t know if we can just post ones we have already written. Sure would be easier, huh? Kinda like “cheating” at school…I am familiar with that more than the extra credit! HA! I think we can…..still new at this too!
Cheating certainly sounds easier, but then would we really win? 😉
Congratulations!! Look at you, spreading your wings! Congrats!
Thank you my dear! Full credit goes to you for the start!
Yay! So excited you’ve got your own site!
Thank you my friend! I am really excited, too!
Hopefully, I can produce more slice of life, REAL LIFE content!
So fun and exciting! It’s great to have a place of your own, you’ll love it! And no worries, you’ll swim just fine!
Thank you so much Becca!
I appreciate the support and the encouragement!
sweet - is this where the house party is?
this looks great Ashley - I’m going to make myself comfortable here in the comment section. Good luck!
It only became a party when you arrived Eli! 😉
Can’t wait for your comments, as I know they can make the magic happen!
WOOO - HOOOOO!!! I’m so, so happy you. Thrilled is really more like it! What an awesome opportunity. You have been making me laugh since I was 15 years old, and you’re continuting to do so with an authentic, witty slice of reality. It’s just like we’re back in A-lunch at DHS, discussing current events and hot topics. Congratulations, Ash! You’re going to shine!
Okay - and a BIG P.S. = I was a little behind on your column for a few weeks. We had new flooring installed in January, and our wireless connection and interent were down for about a week. (It was torture. PRaise God for 4G cell phones, so I could at least keep up with e-mail and online banking). Anyhoo- I went back and read the ones I missed. OH.DEAR.GOD. I still feel horrible that you were carried off by a stretcher after you visited ME. I will always feel slightly responsible. Perhaps it was my lack of cooking for my guests that did it. The McDonald’s chicken nugget that through your body over the edge. Nonetheless, I’m really sorry that it happend on my watch, and I’m really sorry that I just now read it. And may I just say- we look better with age!
Thank you! :):)
My 15 year old self totally appreciates the validation, as I honestly don’t know how funny I was back then, with the lack of self confidence and boy craziness and all, I definitely think like good wine, my humor has grown better with age.
Ha, ha, ha on the McDonald’s Chicken Nugget causing the kidney stone…if only, then I totally could have sued them and we would all be rich and there would be no need for me to vent on blogs! 😉
And I have no idea what you mean about looking better with age? You don’t think me trying to pretend that I could take my perfectly stick straight hair and turn into Keri Russell’s God given curls was the way to go? Huh. Having seen pictures from your London trip, I know you look FABULOUS!
The website just looks amazing!!!!!
I LOVE all of the great details and graphics!
HOW EXCITING!!! YOU ROCK!!
Thank you so much!
I appreciate it! It has been fun to figure out how to fine tune everything…but I had A LOT of help!!
Congrats girl! I have no doubt that you WILL rock this!
You’re an amazing writer and you have a unique perspective, one that I admire and truly appreciate. I look forward to reading more of your stuff!
Thank you so much Crystal!
From a fellow writer, this is a HUGE compliment that I will happily take and appreciate!
